Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Even a felony indictment isn't enough to prevent Texans from buying guns according to a recent ruling. U.S. District Judge David Counts, appointed by former President Donald Trump, highlighted a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in June that put forth law abiding Americans have a right to carry firearms for self-defense. Counts ruled, "The Second Amendment is not a 'second class right.' No longer can courts balance away a constitutional right." Opposition in the relevant case maintained, "The Second Amendment has always allowed laws restricting the gun rights of groups viewed by legislatures as posing a public-safety risk, including those accused but not convicted of wrongdoing." However, Counts has decided that indicted felons will continue to remain innocent until proven guilty for the time being. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  2. Oktoberfest is coming, and breweries across Houston are getting ready to host events and throw parties beer-fitting of the holiday. Eureka Heights Brew Co. will host an event this Saturday with live music, photo ops, games, and themed food including sauerkraut, brats, and pretzels. Saint Arnold Brewery will host an event next weekend Sept. 30 - Oct. 1 where you can enjoy live Polka music, glass beer boots, and beer goggle races. Lastly, Karbachtoberfest will be held every weekend in October at Karbach Brewing Company featuring live music, stein hoisting competitions, wiener dog races and the brewery's Bavarian-style lager. 3. Bassist and singer Dusty Hill of Houston band ZZ Top may have passed last year, but his dying wish for the iconic band to continue playing live music continues to see fulfillment as the band returns home for a show this weekend. ZZ's latest album "La Futura" came out over a decade ago now, but, despite Hill's passing, there may be new music in the works. Drummer Frank Beard said, "There are a few things that we've begun, how do I say this, we've started peeling the onion." He also says that no matter the band's 51 years of age they are seeing more ZZ Top beards and "pre-school tykes being held up" at their shows than ever. Age is just a number, man. You can catch ZZ Top live this Sunday at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. (Houston Chronicle)
  4. Police deputies working off-duty were targeted by a shooter at the Tri-State Fair & Rodeo in Amarillo. The gunman wounded three, including two first-responders and a bystander, before being wounded by police returning fire. Victims of the shooting were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Meanwhile, the shooter was said to have sustained life-threatening injuries but currently remains stable. Texas Rangers is currently investigating a motive for the unprovoked shooting. (ABC13)
  5. Houston's Best Dressed list celebrated its 40th anniversary with a photo shoot at a European mansion and a champagne toast to over $1 million in donations raised for March of Dimes. Houston's Best Dressed has worked to fundraise money for March of Dimes for many years now, but this year marks the first that they have hit the $1 million milestone prior to the Best Dressed luncheon. A surprise six-figure donation from one of the Best Dressed members herself is what pushed numbers over the 1 million mark. March of Dimes is a nonprofit that seeks to improve upon the health and safety of both mothers and babies. As a side note, this year's 2022 Best Dressed class is the most ethnically diverse to date.
