Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Houston earned a number 11 ranking in America's Best Cities list: six spots closer to the top compared to last year. The list is maintained by a company called Resonance Consultancy which advises on economic development, tourism, and real estate. Houston's climb up the rankings is thanks to the city's culinary chops, diversity, and southern hospitality-inspired culture. Mayor Sylvester Turner commented, "Houston is a diverse and vibrant metro where individuals can start a family, grow their business, attend world-class institutions and universities, or be immersed in the 145 languages that are spoken by our residents." (Subscription/Houston Chronicle)
  2. Between Jinya and Ramen Tatsuya, the Houston ramen scene was already getting spicy, but LA newcomer Killer Noodle is about to turn up the heat to 11. The chain features three signature ramen bowls. Firstly, there's its original style topped with white mapo tofu. Second is its Tokyo Ramen that features peanut and sesame flavors. Last and spiciest of all is its Downtown ramen which is brewed with vinegar and chili. Whichever style you choose, you can also select your heat level on levels from "no spice" to their namesake "killer." As you might expect, Killer Noodle serves customary Japanese appetizers, beer, and sake as well. Their first Houston location opens in the Heights off of Shepherd drive on Oct. 15. (Eater Houston)
  3. Houston's proximity to Mexico has many edible benefits, and a selection of some of the best churros you can find is one of them. Restaurants across Houston all offer its own unique take on the cinnamon-sweet dessert. Here are some of the best. Angels Churros & Chocolate brands itself as Houston's first "churreria" and offers Spanish style churros made from an oddly specific cooking device called a churrera. If you're not one for tradition, there's also Churromania at the Galleria mall which provides the option of chocolate or dulce de leche drizzle. In case you want to get even stranger, Glazed Doughnut Cafe provides a different take on the Mexican classic by turning their churro offerings into doughnuts. Whichever churro destination you choose, don't forget to enjoy your churro with a dollop of ice cream on the side. (Chron)
  4. A study from research company Clever claimed that Houston's live music scene is one of the worst in the country, but locals wholeheartedly disagree. The study in question judged the viability of a city's live music scene by the number of major music festivals hosted there. While Houston isn't home to many major music festivals, it does offer numerous intimate concert venues including White Oak Hall, 713 Music Hall, the House of Blues, the Warehouse at Studio Live, the Bayou Music Center, NRG Park during the rodeo, and more. She is a friendly, fun-loving dog that even counts squirrels among her friends. Sadly, the squirrels don't feel the same way.
