Here are the top stories today in Houston:
- Halloween is coming to Houston this weekend, and we've got a list of all the local businesses holding celebrations. Pull up to Brennan's this Saturday with a pointy hat on if you want to take part in their Witchy Brunch featuring a three-course meal. Attendees who wear costumes will also have the opportunity to enjoy a complimentary trouble tree filled with cocktail shots. That same night, Brasserie 19 is hosting their annual Halloween party with Halloween themed shots, a DJ, and a costume contest with prizes. In case you're not in the mood to dance, there's also Flight Club Houston's Victorian-era British fairground party starting at 7pm this Saturday. You can expect more of the same including specialty cocktails and a costume contest while also enjoying the greatest dart bar in Houston, complimentary treats, and a mystical tarot card reader. - The Wortham Center will be transformed into the world's first-ever Holotheater in preparation for an event called Dinosaur Discoveries. The event will make use of 3D hologram and video mapping technology in order to bring viewers closer to "living" dinosaurs than ever before. Director Ryan Latham said, "We like to call it immersive story-telling, if you will. Whereas, you know, we're gonna bring you into the natural environment of the content bringing you closer to the characters of the shows than ever before through the technology and, of course, the holograms, but also in the way that we try to take a cutting edge approach to the script of the shows, and how we connect the audience emotionally with the story, and bring the storyline together through the immersive aspect of all of this." The cherry on top? No 3D goggles or anything like that required. Experience the event first at opening night on Friday, November 18. (FOX 26 Houston)
- As a consequence of the Astros sweeping the Yankees in game 4 of the ALCS last night, all 32 Houston Academy locations opened after dark to sell Astros World Series merch. One fan found shopping late last night said, "The fact that we swept it in the Yankee's own house, it's like, you can't ask for a better feeling, especially being from Houston and after all the stuff that's been talked about us. It was the icing on top of the cake." I couldn't have put it better myself, my friend. It's impossible to forget that the Yankees claimed they had only lost to the Astros in 2017 due to the cheating scandal. What's your excuse this time, New York? (ABC13)
- A Slingshot driver is critically injured after driving his vehicle in the wrong direction and sparking a five-vehicle crash. The incident happened on Farm to Market Road 529 on Saturday night. Due to the severity of the driver's injury, police were unable to determine whether driver impairment factored into the crash. Thankfully, the drivers of the four other vehicles involved escaped the wreck unscathed. The wreck serves as a reminder for all Houston drivers of the dangers of driving in the Bayou City. It shouldn't have to be said, but always double check you're heading down the right side of the road, especially when driving through downtown's many one-way streets. (Houston Chronicle)
- A Houston man who waited hours to vote in 2020 has had voter fraud charges against him dropped. Hervis Rogers is an over 60-year-old Houstonian who served time in 1995 after being convicted of burglary. He left prison on parole in 2004, but his parole didn't end until June 2020. Consequently, when he went out to vote in March of 2020, he unknowingly and accidentally committed a second-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Attorney General Ken Paxton learned of the crime after Rogers was featured on social media for waiting many hours outside of an election office to vote and brought charges against him over a year after the incident. Thankfully for Rogers, the charges were dropped after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals reiterated that the attorney general cannot unilaterally prosecute election crimes. Rogers says he is glad to finally be able to return to his daily life without the threat of life in prison looming over him. (Houston Defender)
