'Harvey Conman' Sentenced To Five Years In Prison

Aaron Dean Oaks has pleaded guilty to pilfering more than $30,000 dollars from Hurricane Harvey victims.

HOUSTON, TX — A 35-year-old man has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $30,000 dollars from Hurricane Harvey victims in October 2017, according to Harris County court documents. Aaron Dean Oaks was sentenced to five years in jail for failing to perform work on homes in Harris, Brazoria, and Galveston Counties, court documents state.

“We aren’t going to tolerate anyone preying on our community, especially in a time of crisis,” Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement, according to Houston Public Media. “We will continue to seek justice on behalf of victims who faced the indignity of being targeted by criminals using the storm’s wrath to unleash their scams.”

In the months following Harvey, which decimated Houston in August 2017, the city was flooded with thousands of fraud complaints claiming someone had filed for FEMA assistance using their information, ABC13 reported.
