Helping Hand: Community Bands Together To Help Disabled Vet

Splendora community leaders join forces to help army vet who was left stranded, ripped off for bridge repair

SPLENDORA, TX — Sherry Lilley, a disabled U.S. Army veteran, lives a bit off the beathen path, and that’s just about how he likes it.

For years, he's lived a quiet life in a mobile home across a wooden bridge in East Montgomery County.

However, that isolation has caused a bit of an issue when it comes to getting medical help, and much of that had to do with the wooden bridge leading to his driveway.

In fact, it was so bad that the fire department had to use an ATV to come and get him to get Lilley to a hospital.

Seeing that the bridge was falling apart, Lilley contracted with a man in April to repair the dilapidated bridge leading to his home.

He took out a loan of $6,000 and paid the man, who promptly changed his phone number and took off with Lilley’s money without doing any of the work, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter.

Hearing about Lilley’s plight, Montgomery County Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace James Metts, Precinct 4 Constable Kenneth Hayden, and members of the community came out to repair the wooden bridge and Lilley’s driveway, KPRC reported.

Crews spent the better part of Wednesday clearing brush from the drive, adding gravel, clearing the water line and repairing the bridge; donating all of the labor and materials to help the 70-year old disabled veteran.

Meanwhile, Metts has set up a GoFundMe Page to help Lilley recover the expenses of the money that was stolen.

So far, $2,415 of the $6,000 has been donated.
