Houston City Council Votes To Rename Dowling Street In Third Ward To Emancipation Avenue

Street was named for Confederate leader; change will take effect on June 19.

HOUSTON, TX -- The Houston City Council voted Wednesday to change the name of Dowling Street in Houston’s Third Ward to Emancipation Avenue.

Dowling Street, which was originally called East Broadway, was renamed Dowling Street in honor of Confederate leader Dick Dowling.

Texas Rep. Garnet Coleman, who represents Houston’s Third Ward in the Texas Legislature, thanked Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and the Houston City Council for the approval.

The change will take effect in June and will coincide with the reopening of Emancipation Park, scheduled for June 19.
