Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. As the murders of four Muslim men over the course of 10 days continue to be investigated in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mayor Sylvester Turner has instructed HPD to increase patrols around mosques. He tweeted, "Houston stands with our Muslim brothers and sisters in #Albuquerque and Houston and throughout our country. An attack against one is an attack on us all. I am asking HPD to beef up security around our Mosques." Houston's Muslim community makes up about 11 percent of the city's total populace. Police in Albuquerque are currently investigating whether the four murders there are linked due to the overlapping presence of a vehicle of interest. (Houston Public Media)
  2. Houston rapper Bun B's Trill Burger won the Good Morning America award for best burger in America, so where can you eat one? Unfortunately, there is currently no brick and mortar location at which you can grab this elusive meat stack. However, Trill Burger will be hosting two pop-ups this month that self-acclaimed burger aficionados would be loathe to miss. The first will be at 8th Wonder Brewery this Sunday, August 14th from noon to 6 p.m. The second will be in collaboration with the city of Houston at Houston City Hall from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 28. If you can't make either of these pop-ups, fear not! There is still hope for your taste buds grasping the trill burger later this year when Bun B opens a permanent location. (Eater Houston)
  3. Select Houston-area school districts can expect to see a bolstered police presence as kids return to school. Students in Humble ISD, New Caney ISD, Hull-Daisetta ISD, and Alief ISD will see an increased on-campus police presence as hundreds of deputies are tasked with keeping the schools safe. Furthermore, the HISD board of trustees is set to vote on spending over $100,000 on additional police equipment including ballistic plate shields, guns, and ammo. Personally, I can't help but wonder if we'll ever address the root of the issue instead of continuing to slap band-aids on a flesh wound. (Houston Public Media)
  4. Love them or hate them, influencers are here to stay. For better or for worse, this popular new career path has blazed its way across communities thanks to the aid of social media platforms. Town Square podcast speaks with internationally recognized Houstonian influencers Holly Tuggy and Harper Watters in order to shed light on how exactly influencing works. Who are they influencing, what are they influencing them to do, and what does it all mean for the greater Houston economy? Listen online to learn more. (Houston Public Media)
  5. New York designer Jennifer Hunter put the power of wallpaper on full display in redesigning a Houston family's West University Place home. Transitioning away from the home's contemporary aesthetic, the owners wanted their abode to resonate a more comforting atmosphere for their newborn children. Hunter employed wallpapers in nearly every room in order to generate the requested effect. Wallpaper, or "wall coverings" as more well-to-do circles have come to call it, is the perfect material for redesigning a home without breaking the bank. As Hunter says, "We like to think of it as jewelry for the wall." (PaperCity Magazine)
