🌱 Houston Election Day

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening.

But first, today's weather:

Sunshine and patchy clouds. High: 85 Low: 65.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Local elections this year proved that Texas remains a red state with the races for governor, attorney general, and House districts ending in clear favor of Republicans. Incumbent Greg Abbott took nearly 55 percent of the vote for governor while Attorney General incumbent Ken Paxton did the same. Republicans also maintained seven out of the eleven district U.S. House seats as expected. Meanwhile, Harris county nearly saw Alexandra Mealer elected in the judge race against incumbent Lina Hidalgo in a razor thin race that ended with Mealer's concession after she lost by just over a single percentage point. (Houston Chronicle)
  2. Election day is bucking expectations across the country as Democratic voters display resilient victories across a number of key battlegrounds. Democrats won governor's elections in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Furthermore, John Fetterman managed to clinch a Republican Senate seat. However, Senate seats in Wisconsin, Nevada, Georgia and Arizona remain too close to be called, leaving the nation unsure of whether control of the chamber will remain blue. Potential Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told supporters prior to the election, "When you wake up tomorrow, we will be in the majority." Only time will tell whether sweeping predictions of Republican control in the House and Senate will hold true. (KHOU11)
  3. There's nothing more Texan than a finely cooked steak and Houston offers more than a couple venues where you can enjoy one. B&B Butchers and Restaurant on Washington is one of a few dozen eateries certified by the Kobe Beef Association of Japan despite providing an atmosphere that keeps things casual. Brenner's Steakhouse off of the Katy Freeway is an old favorite of Houstonians dating all the way back to 1936. There's also the Warwick on Westheimer, which has established somewhat of a cult following, where you can dig into a steak with a New American flare. (Chron)
  4. As the fall weather finally settles in across the Bayou City, there's no better time to experience patio dining at a number of underutilized venues. Diners interested in a date will have trouble finding a better experience than Coltivare on White Oak where each table comes with its very own personal outdoor heater among gravel lanes and a beautiful garden space. Meanwhile, La Lucha on Shepherd will place you in the shadow of a giant oak tree. Old school lamps hang from the tree's winding branches, providing a warm lighting to the atmosphere. For more such patio hotspots, check the link attached. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. A repeat offender is accused of stabbing a Houston father 7 times at a motel following an argument. Suspect George Hodge, 35, stabbed Greg Downs, 61, repeatedly as he was going door to door at the motel looking for people to rob. Hodge had been convicted of multiple prior crimes including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony evading arrest. According to court documents, he's been in trouble with the law more than a dozen times and charged with assault three different times. Police say that the incident could have and should have been avoided. Downs is in the hospital currently fighting for his life in the ICU. (KPRC Click2Houston)

  • It seems that as far as Texas politics are concerned, the more things change, the more they stay the same. • A man who had snatched over $18,000 worth of purses didn't even make it past the store's oldest security measure: a door. Surveillance video caught the man running face first into a glass exit and knocking himself out cold. (FOX 26 Houston via Facebook)
