Houston Man Among Five Wounded In DC Shooting

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A Houston man was among the five people who were shot Wednesday morning at a practice for a congressional baseball game outside of Washington, DC.

Zack Barth, who serves as a congressional aid for US Rep. Roger Williams (R-Austin), was wounded after a gunman, later identified as James T. Hodgkinson, fired as many as 50 rounds from an automatic rifle at players who were practicing at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park.

Also injured in the shooting were US Rep. Steve Scalise, a Republican from Louisiana, and several members of the security detail at the ballpark, who exchanged gunfire with Hodgkinson.

Barth, who graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 2015, has served with a number of politicians including internships with U.S. Rep John Culberson, U.S. District Judge Gray Miller and former Houston Mayor Pro-Tem Ed Gonzalez, and also worked for the Jeb Bush presidential campaign, KHOU reported.

Several Texas lawmakers were at the ballfield including Williams, U.S. Rep Joe Barton, Kevin Brady and Mike Conaway.

Brady (R-The Woodlands) left the ballpark shortly before the shooting, and was unhurt.

Family members are on their way to Washington to be with Barth, who is expected to fully recover from his injuries.
