Mayor's Statement on White House Taking Away FEMA Disaster Relief Funds
August 27, 2019 -- Mayor Sylvester Turner's statement on the White House shifting FEMA disaster relief funds to the expansion of migrant detention facilities and asylum hearing sites on the U.S.-Mexico border:
"This is ill-advised, especially when cities are still recovering from disasters and we find ourselves in the midst of hurricane season. We simply don’t know what that future holds, but we do know that we need more money for disaster recovery, not less. Pulling money from FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund will set back Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts and break promises made, and policies implemented, to help Houstonians."
