Houston Residents Among Millions Navigating Financial Dependence as Independence Goals Shift Nationwide
Study finds growing financial dependence and uncertainty nationwide, with many questioning whether independence is achievable
As Americans approach the nation’s 250th anniversary of independence, new data shows financial independence remains a challenge for many—including households across Houston facing rising costs and economic uncertainty.
According to Northwestern Mutual’s 2026 Planning & Progress Study, 42% of U.S. adults currently rely on their parents for some level of financial support. More than half of Millennials and one-third of Gen X report financial dependence, while Gen Z shows the highest reliance, with nearly three-quarters saying they still depend on their parents to some degree.
At the same time, fewer than half of Americans (44%) say they are fully financially independent today. For many, the path to independence is taking longer than expected. On average, Americans say they achieve—or expect to achieve—financial independence at age 37.

The study also reveals growing uncertainty about whether financial independence is attainable at all. One in five U.S. adults say they do not expect to ever reach it, underscoring concerns about affordability, debt, and long-term financial stability.
Across generations, Americans largely agree that financial independence is more difficult to achieve today than it was in the past. More than half (56%) say it is harder now than for previous generations, highlighting the impact of rising living costs and broader economic pressures.

“Many people are working hard to make smart financial decisions, but without a clear plan, it can feel like progress is slow or uncertain,” said Larry Balthazar, financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. “Having a structured financial plan—and a trusted advisor to guide it—can help individuals build confidence, prioritize goals, and take meaningful steps toward financial independence.”
While Houston has long been known for opportunity and growth, many residents are navigating the same national trends—balancing day-to-day expenses with long-term financial goals in an increasingly complex environment.
“We’re seeing a shift in how people define and achieve financial independence, especially as costs continue to rise and timelines extend,” said Kervin Simmons, financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual. “A personalized financial plan helps bring clarity to those challenges, giving individuals and families a roadmap to stay on track and adapt as their lives and the economy evolve.”
The study’s findings highlight a broader shift in how Americans approach major financial milestones, with more individuals relying on guidance and long-term planning to navigate uncertainty and build a path toward independence.
