Hurricane Names Harvey, Irma, And Maria Officially Retired

Names of hurricanes and storms that made history are being officially retired by the World Meteorological Organization.

HOUSTON, TX — Harvey, Irma, Maria and Nate joined an imposing list of storm names never to be used again.

On Thursday, the World Meteorological Organization announced that the names of the costliest storms of 2017 would be officially retired.

Since 1954, 86 names have been dropped from the list with the most added after the 2005 hurricane season that included Katrina and Rita.

  • William

The 2018 hurricane season begins on June 1, and continues through to Nov. 30 with experts predicting another busy storm season for the Atlantic and Gulf Coast.

For 2018, 14 named tropical storms are predicted to form, with seven strengthening into hurricanes, and three of those major hurricanes.
