Lunch Lady Sheds 100 Pounds Eating Cafeteria Food

Promotion unintentionally launches local woman to start her weight loss journey, and helps propel her to a healthier lifestyle

BAYTOWN, TX -- A Goose Creek Consolidated ISD cafeteria worker has taken an unconventional approach to dieting and only cost her 100 pounds.

For the last year, Tammy McRae who works at Carver Elementary School, is 100 pounds lighter after she ate her own cafeteria food every day for a year.

McRae, who initially began working at the school as a dishwasher, was quickly promoted to manager because of her positive attitude.

The promotion unintentionally jump-started her on the road to a healthier lifestyle.

“I took the job and I initially lost 15 pounds out of nervousness,” McRae told KPRC.
“But I felt so much better after I lost that weight.”

One of her dietary habits was fast food, and it was a commonality for her to stop for a burger and fries and supersize the meal, or have sugary donuts to start her day.

In September 2015, McRae, who then weighed 260 pounds, took the next step on her journey and ditched the junk food.

So, she started eating breakfast and lunch from her cafeteria menu every single day.

The breakfast options usually included fresh fruit and cereal, while the lunches had fresh vegetables or healthier options, such as broccoli and cheese baked potato, boneless chicken wings or sun butter and jelly, and dinner was a little bit of fruit or a little yogurt, McRae said.

By the time Christmas 2015 rolled around, McRae and others noticed she was starting to shed the weight.

“People started to saying my clothes looked baggy and that I looked thinner,” McRae said.

Now a year later, McRae is at a slimmer 160 pounds.

The life change, McRae said, has made her better at her job and in her personal life, because now she’s healthier.

McRae said she has no plans to go back to supersizing and eating poorly, and plans to stick to the cafeteria options that she’s embraced.

“I did it for me, and everything else is just icing on the cake,” McRae said.
