Montgomery ISD Teacher Killed In Head-On Collision

Police said driver of Chevy Impala crossed center line and hit Runnels' SUV head -on, the crash is still under investigation.

MONTGOMERY, TX -- A beloved Montgomery ISD elementary school teacher was killed, and her daughter was critically injured when the SUV they were driving was hit head-on Wednesday afternoon

The accident happened at about 4:30 p.m. on FM 2854, west of Honea Egypt Road.

According to investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety, the GMC Yukon, driven by Jennifer Runnels, was traveling east on FM 2854, when a silver Chevrolet Impala that was traveling westbound, crossed the center line of FM 2854 and hit Runnels’ Yukon head-on.

The driver of the Impala, a 20-year old man, died at the scene.

His identity has not been released.

Runnels and her 10-year old daughter were critically injured, and both were taken to a hospital, where Runnels later died.

Montgomery ISD sent a statement to parents and staff on Wednesday:
"This evening a heartbreaking tragedy struck our Lone Star family when Mrs. Runnels, a fourth grade teacher, failed to survive a car accident. We will have additional counselors and administrators on hand throughout the week for our boys and girls. However, news of this nature may need to be broken by parents."

Grief counselors were on hand at Lone Star Elementary on Thursday to help students cope with the loss of one of their teachers.
