If you’re looking for a gift for the lady in your life, jewelry is usually the way to go. Even though it sounds like an easy gift, picking a piece of jewelry for someone can be challenging, especially if you don’t know what she might prefer in terms of the gem. Since there are a bunch of different options, how do you pick?

One of the quickest (and easiest) ways to pick a piece of jewelry for the lady in your life is to do so by birthstone. It’s always relevant, and for the most part, she’ll appreciate that her birthstone never goes out of style. Remember chocolate diamonds? No? That’s exactly the point.

Birthstones are an easy way to personalize and customize a gift, especially because there are few things more personal than a birthday. Peridot is the most common birthstone in almost every single state, which is to say: when in doubt, pick peridot.

Based on the number of reported births each month, Shane Co. determined the most popular birthstone in each state. For the most part, peridot wins. August is obviously the most common birthday month in the country, because 40 states favor this birthstone, including Texas.

What sets the Texas numbers aside is that the second most common birthstone in the Lonestar State is the Opal whose month du jour is October.

So how much is this birthstone going to cost you?

Fortunately, in terms of gems and birthstones, Texas’ most common birthstone is one of the less expensive ones. Peridot gems and jewelry with this particular birthstone averages just under $200. On the opposite end of the spectrum, rubies are somewhere around $3,000.

Texas’ second most common birthstone, Opals, tend to have a higher price tag than peridot. One thing to note with opals, though, is that their pricing changes based on the type of opal -- and yes, there are several.
