The Most Popular Cookbook in Texas is Not What You Think

Who would've guessed that we love healthy eating so much?

It’s no surprise that we Texans love our food. From classic local chains like Whataburger to classics across the South like sweet tea and chicken fried steak, it’s also pretty fair to say that our most popular dishes are not exactly healthy. In fact, Texas is pretty low on the list of healthiest states in the US, rated 34 out of 50. But there might be change brewing, according to a new study of the most popular cookbooks in the US.

As reported in the study, the most popular cookbook in Texas over the last year was The Defined Dish: Whole30 Endorsed, Healthy and Wholesome Weeknight Recipes by Alex Snodgrass. This study analyzed Google search volume, which means that of the most popular 100 cookbooks on Barnes & Noble’s website, Texans were searching for this healthy, Whole30 cookbook the most.

What exactly is Whole30? It’s a diet, similar to the paleo diet, that emphasizes whole foods and eliminates sugar, alcohol, grains, legumes, soy, and dairy, typically for a 30 day cycle. The idea is to revamp your diet by slowly reintroducing these foods once the diet is complete, to determine which of them make you feel the best, and leave the rest out of your regular diet.

The Defined Dish is a New York Times bestselling cookbook by blogger-turned-cookbook-author Alex Snodgrass and includes dishes that are gluten-free, dairy-free, and grain-free. So why is this health-focused cookbook so popular in Texas?

Well, it could be because Snodgrass is a native Texan who currently lives in Dallas, and Texans love to support their own. But it could also be indicative of a change in eating practices across the Lone Star State. The cookbook has sold well across the country, but its popularity in Texas is a hopeful sign for Texans looking to invest in good health and clean eating.

The Defined Dish was also the most popular cookbook in Louisiana last year. Another health-conscious cookbook across the South included The Plant Paradox Cookbook: 100 Delicious Recipes to Help You Lose Weight, Heal Your Gut, and Live Lectin-Free by Steven Gundry, most popular in North Carolina and Florida.
