New Survey Report: Texas Has the Most Doorbell Cameras in the U.S

Doorbell cameras are one of the hottest new technologies out there. A new survey shows where they are most popular in the U.S.

Doorbell cameras such as Nest and Ring rose to mainstream popularity in the last few years, sparking plenty of debate on whether they actually fight crime or invade privacy. In the era of the Amazon boom, many consumers are worried about package theft, which contributed to the meteoric rise in this technology’s use. However, very little data is publically available about these cameras –where are they being purchased? Which neighborhoods have the most doorbell cameras throughout the nation? For families seeking to move to safe neighborhoods, this looks like an increasingly important question of our time.

A new survey conducted by security camera company CheckVideo surveyed 5,000 people across the U.S. to determine where doorbell cameras are most popular, and why people purchase them. As it turns out, Texas is the most popular state for doorbell cameras, with 30% of respondents from Texas reporting that they owned one. This is comparison to states like Maine or Massachusetts, where only 2.9% and 5.9% of respondents own doorbell cameras, respectively.

Since Texas is such a big state, it’s important to realize that this data doesn’t mean that doorbell cameras are ubiquitous. Likely, they’re concentrated in suburban areas just outside of the state’s major cities. Just a few weeks ago in a Houston suburb, a man accused of raping an 86-year-old woman was caught on a doorbell camera in her neighborhood earlier that day. It’s one anecdote of many that show how doorbell cameras in Texas have shaped public safety and security in neighborhoods across the state.

Interestingly, when polled on if they would purchase a doorbell camera if they didn’t already own one, Texans were less than enthusiastic –only 26% responded yes, which pales in comparison to other states, such as North Dakota at 46.5%. Maybe the doorbell camera market in Texas has already been maximized to capacity, and the state won’t see many more homeowners purchasing the technology.

The survey also looked into the reasons why people purchase doorbell cameras. 66.3% are focused on home security, while 56.2% reported they are concerned about package theft. Time will tell if this technology decreases local crime, including package theft, as long as we continue to collect data on the subject.
