Here are the top stories today in Houston:
- Cyclists took to the streets without their clothing this past Saturday as they gathered for the 12th annual "World Naked Bike Ride Houston". The event has been organized for over a decade now as a protest that pushes for alternative modes of transportation. Event organizers say that the nakedness of the riders is a symbol of how vulnerable bike riders are on the road. They also believe that riding in the nude is one of few ways to garner attention towards their greater message of raising consciousness for alternative transport. In case you're wondering, it's 100 percent illegal to be naked in the public eye of Houston no matter how big of a bicycle you've got between your legs. (KHOU11)
- The mother of a special needs teenager who was killed in Harris County Jail is filing a federal lawsuit against Harris County. 19-year-old Fred Harris was killed in October of last year after being beaten and stabbed by cellmate Michael Ownby. Harris was originally placed in the jail after being accused of flashing a knife to another teenager that scared him. Family attorney Randall Kallinen said, "He [Harris] had never been convicted of a crime in his life, and based on the facts as we know it, would probably not have been convicted of this crime." Harris' mother claims she pleaded with jail facilitators to move Harris out of general population due to his special needs as well as the fact that he weighed 98 pounds. Harris' organs were donated after his death, and his heart eventually ended up going to a child. (KHOU11)
- Two people are dead after separate shootings took place within hours of each other in Northeast Houston. Houston police officers investigating the crime scene of the first shooting heard gunshots coming from down the street just hours into their investigation. HPD Asst. Chief Yasar Bashir said, "It's definitely a concern for our officers, because they are out here doing their job and then you hear gunshots. It's definitely a concern. But for tonight, we already have our crime suppression teams. We are going to increase our police presence in this area, especially if you have a lot of neighbors. They are out watching." HPD believe the shootings are unrelated and have not identified any motives or suspects. (KTRK-TV)
- US Rep. Kevin Brady (R) is retiring from Congress after representing the northern Houston area for 26 years, however, his job isn't quite done yet. Though this may be his last term, Brady looks to push through legislation that would help Americans with their finances. Brady said, "Our focus now is helping people who never saved you know get into that category of having control over your life, so we still have items on our plate to do." Brady shared his thoughts during a segment he did with Houston journalist Khambrel Marshall where the congressman also spoke on the chances of Trump running for the presidency again, inflation issues, and why the recently passed "Inflation Reduction Act" won't work as planned. - HISD volunteers went door-to-door for the "Grads Within Reach Walk" this weekend to speak with Houston teens who failed to reenroll to school this fall. Teenagers that the volunteers spoke with commonly shared many times more responsibility than most others their age. Responsibilities included things like holding down a job, taking care of siblings, and handling other household chores to help support their families. Currently, HISD enrollment is down over 20,000 students from pre-pandemic times. (Houston Chronicle)
