PETA Honors Houston Man Who Died Saving Cat During Hurricane Harvey

NORFOLK, VA — A 25-year old man who was electrocuted while trying to rescue his sister’s cat from her flooded home during Hurricane Harvey, was honored by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals with a memorial leaf on the organization’s Tree of Life.

Andrew Pasek, a former Eagle Scout, had gone to his sisters flooded home in Bear Creek Village to get her cat, D'Artagnan, which had been left behind during that she thought would be a short evacuation.

A friend who was with Pasek said they were both wading through knee-deep floodwaters in front of his sister’s home on Aug 29, when Pasek came into contact with an electric current from a submerged live wire.

"The world lost a kind soul when Andrew Pasek lost his life to keep an animal from suffering," PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. "PETA hopes his legacy of compassion will inspire people to care for animals during times of crisis."

The small golden leaf on PETA’s Tree of Life honoring Pasek reads simply: “In Loving Memory, Andrew Joseph Pasek, Animal Lover and Hero.”

Pasek is one of dozens who’ve been honored by PETA, included Barney the dog of former President George W. Bush, and Singer Christina Grimmie, a Voice contestant who was killed by a stalker in 2016.
