🌱 Race for Texas Education + Chevy Transit Backlash + New York Dogs
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening.
First, today's weather:
Humid; a stray afternoon thunderstorm. High: 92 Low: 79.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories today in Houston:
- A Houston-area race for a seat on the Texas State Board of Education has the seat's previous incumbent convinced that it's a fight for the soul of Texas Education. Republican incumbent Matt Robinson was made ineligible for re-election when the Legislature redistricted him to another area. In a strange twist, Robinson is pushing for the Democrat in the race, Galveston teacher Dan Hoffman, to win. He cites his support around the belief that Republican candidate Julie Pickren will be bad for education. Pickren previously had a seat on the Alvin Independent School District before she was voted off for participating in the protest at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. (Houston Chronicle )
- Chevy is facing a wave of Twitter backlash for a Houston ad that claims its newest truck is "Houston's Massive Transit System." Renewable energy project developer and Twitter user Michael Moritz tweeted out a picture of the ad last week. Since then, it has seen hundreds of retweets as well as thousands of replies. Moritz said, "I thought it was absolutely heinous. There's obviously a climate change that's upon us, the climate crisis that's moving, and with vehicles getting heavier it's only requiring more consumption of carbon fuels." The response to the ad was made worse by the fact that many feel Houston's lack of public transit is not something to be celebrated. (Chron)
- The Houston SPCA returned 28 injured and orphaned great egrets and blue herons to the wild earlier this month. The birds were found in Cypress back in May and looked to be in bad shape after their nesting area had been destroyed. Thankfully, two months of R&R later and these federally protected migratory birds were able to take flight and return to their native habitats. The Houston SPCA's Wildlife Center of Texas cares for over 12,000 such native animals every year. (CultureMap Houston)
- New York Eatery restaurant in Bellaire is now serving up four delicious hot dogs inspired from their namesake home. The dogs were introduced to the menu in the midst of National Hot Dog month, which happens to be July in case you're like me and had no clue. Funnily enough, I have been strangely craving hot dogs all this month. The current dogs they offer include the Original, the Chelsea with sauerkraut, the Brooklyn Bridge with lox, sour cream, and scallions, and the Yonkers dog packed with bacon and onions. Yep, I'm still in the mood for a hot dog. (Fox26 Houston)
- The METRO Police Department is turning a problem into a potential to help those in need. People struggling with homelessness across Houston often use METRO public transit to shelter from poor environmental conditions. In the past, METRO officers would be sent out to remove these individuals. However, two months ago the METRO started a C.A.R.E. Unit team which seeks to respectfully support these homeless by connecting them with local shelters, medical care, and other useful resources. Since then, over 20 struggling homeless the C.A.R.E. team made contact with have taken up space in shelters. The METRO plans to add a second C.A.R.E team to their roster in August. From my notebook:
- Alvin ISD has banned smart watches and ear pods on their campuses. These modern-day devices may offer convenience, but they also make for easy methods of student academic dishonesty. (KPRC2 / Click2Houston via Facebook)
- The HPD are currently receiving more than 30 reports of catalytic converter thefts per day. Thieves steal these coveted pollutant reducers in order to sell them for a quick profit to smelters who make even more by reducing the converters to their base metals.
