🌱 Real Agave + Space City History

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Today, we'll look at:

  • Celebrating Mexican Independence Day.
  • A new tequila hotspot.
  • Remembering JFK's space address.

Here are the top stories in Houston today:

  1. Mexican Independence Day will take place this Friday, Sept. 16 and there's no shortage of Houston spots to visit for the celebration. Miller Outdoor Theater will be hosting a traditional marimba band known as Son Rompe Pera. Spanish Village off of Almeda Road will be offering a discount on its enchiladas, $5 margaritas, and mariachi music. Monkey's Tail off of Fulton will be serving up Mexican candy shots, and a new restaurant called El Venado on Washington will be hosting its grand opening weekend with drinks on happy hour prices all weekend long.   2. Downtown Houston will soon be home to a brand-new watering hole specifically devoted to tequila and appropriately named Real Agave. Aside from some of the best tequila and mezcal you can find in Bayou City, Real Agave will feature a menu based off of traditional Mexican cuisine. Hand-painted Dia De Los Muertos murals decorate the interior walls of the restaurant, which is otherwise designed with a modern, minimalist style. The upscale Mexican eatery opens this Wednesday and will maintain business hours from 3:30-8 p.m. through the remainder of September. Come October, Real Agave will be open for lunch as well.   3. President John F. Kennedy gave his historic space address at Rice University 60 years ago to the day yesterday. The address included one of JFK's most memorable quotes: "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard." Houston was chosen as America's space city after it was determined that the Houston area best met the proposed requirements for a space center location. Requirements included a mild climate, a good airport, thousands of acres of relatively cheap land, and the ability to make use of barge transportation. Additionally, Houston also provided a cutting-edge educational institution that could steadily supply NASA with young, bright minds in the form of Rice University. It's no accident that JFK delivered his speech on the grounds of the school. (KHOU11)
  4. Black Page Brewing is a new brewery opening on Little White Oak Bayou that will serve traditional German lagers and inventive new beers. German master brewer Henryk Orlikis in charge of making the beer. Orlik originally learned his craft in his homeland of Germany but moved to the United States nearly 25 years ago. While Black Page is within walking distance of White Oak Music Hall, its location next to the bayou and amongst a number of well-placed trees gives the venue a feeling of seclusion that's hard to find within Houston city limits. Black Page's bar area features 32 taps total, and they plan to open with eight core beers and eventually add-on an additional four seasonal beers. (Chron)
  5. Doctors at Houston Methodist Hospital may have discovered that contracting COVID-19 can result in adverse effects to your heart's arteries. Previous studies surrounding the presence of COVID-19 symptoms after the infection already passed focused on heart muscle, but studies looking into the arteries around the heart are beginning to produce results. In their most recent study, doctors found that patients with prior COVID-19 infection had a nearly 20 percent decrease in blood supplied to the heart. Prior work pointed to COVID-19 affecting the endothelial cells which are receptors that tell your arteries to open up when your heart needs more blood. As per usual, doctors' recommended treatment for these effects including working out, eating healthy, quitting smoking, and controlling cholesterol intake. (Houston Public Media)

  • A lady living in Katy claims that her dog was killed by a pack of coyotes over Labor Day Weekend. The six coyotes entered her yard and attacked her French bulldog Bentley before being driven away by her husband. Unfortunately for Bentley, it was too little too late. (FOX 26 Houston via Facebook)
  • The Houston Rockets visited every Houston Fire Department yesterday to hand out tokens of appreciation in lieu of the anniversary of 9/11. While the team's players didn't make an appearance, firefighters did get a chance to nab a picture with the cheerleaders. (Houston Fire Department via Facebook)
  • The series finale of the Houston Astros versus the Los Angeles Angels ended in spectacular fashion. Bregman hit a grand slam in the third inning that would eventually lead to a total of five home runs and a comeback victory. (Houston Chronicle via Facebook)
