Rep. Al Green Calls For Impeachment Of President Trump

Al Green became the first Democrat to take to the House floor and call for the impeachment of President Donald Trump.

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, became the first member of Congress to take to the House floor to call for the impeachment of President Trump.

The Houston-area congressman went to the House floor and cited the firing of former FBI Director James Comey and said Trump obstructed justice while the FBI was investigating possible interference by Russia in the 2016 U.S. election. (Sign up for the free Houston Patch morning newsletter.)

“There is a belief in this county that no one is above the law, and that includes the president of the United States of America” Green said. “Our democracy is at risk.”

Green, who has served in the House for 12 years, isn’t the first representative to mention the possibility of impeachment proceedings against Trump.

U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, a Democrat from California, who was interviewed for a Rolling Stone article, said Trump should be impeached and that Republicans are starting to think similarly.

Although most Republicans are mum on such a possibility, that could change if recent allegations prove accurate.

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that a memo penned by Comey emerged, which stated that Trump had asked him to stop the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn’s ties to Russia.

U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a Republican from Michigan, told The Hill that if the Comey memorandum is proved to be accurate, then Trump’s’ actions will be considered an impeachable offense.

"But everybody gets a fair trial in this country," Amash told the Hill.

If Trump were impeached, he would become the third sitting president, with President Andrew Johnson being the first in 1868 and President Bill Clinton in 1998.

President Richard Nixon, who resigned amid the Watergate Scandal in 1974, was on the verge of impeachment and an almost certain removal from office.
