Here are the top stories today in Houston:
- Houston might not have the tallest buildings in the world, but it does offer a number of heightened playtime venues. These rooftop sanctuaries will make a great outing at any time. Rise rooftop hosts live music, concerts, and raves in the heart of Midtown. Rooftop Cinema Club allows movie fanatics to enjoy the wonders of cinema amid the fresh, evening air. 77 Degrees Rooftop is a Caribbean-themed watering hole laden with swings, tropical cocktails, and stunning downtown views. For those interested in a classier drinking establishment with a view, there's also Z on 23 Rooftop Bar. Taking in a breathtaking view of the city doesn't have to be a dull experience, and it won't be at any of these popular establishments. (The Rice Thresher)
- Southern Living Magazine's South's Top 50 BBQ joints saw eleven Texas names near the top of the ranks including Truth BBQ, Kileen's, Blood Bros. BBQ, and Tejas Chocolate + BBQ. Each of these BBQ joints is notable not only for their superb traditional meats, but their ability to take the BBQ game to the next level by introducing cultural twists. For instance, Southern Magazine wrote of Blood Bros. "The Texas standards are solid — smoky brisket, tender sliced turkey, an excellent jalapeño cheddar sausage — but the more fusiony creations shine even brighter. Firm, smoky ribs are painted with a sweet and savory gochujang glaze, and brisket fried rice delivers heavenly bursts of smoky beef with each bite. A rotating slate of daily specials like pork vindaloo sausage and char siu banh mi sandwiches guarantee there's always something new and flavorful to discover." (Houston Chronicle)
- Halloween is coming; what better time to visit the most haunted sites in the city? There's no shortage of ghost stories to go around in Houston, and spooky tales abound at old locations everywhere. For example, the downtown tunnels is a site where 10 men were buried alive back in 1722. If you listen closely, you can still hear their screams echoing through the earth. The old spaghetti warehouse, now downtown McIntyre's, saw a pharmacist perish from a fall down an elevator shaft. A year later, his wife died of a broken heart. Today, her spirit still haunts the building, floating outside the second-story windows late at night in hopes of reuniting with her dead lover in the afterlife. The Rice Hotel, La Carafe, and the Julia Ideson building, all located in downtown, share similar stories. Do you dare disturb the dead this spirited season? (Houstonia Magazine)
- Houston's iconic 'Be Someone' graffiti can be found at the I-45 entrance to downtown once more. Longtime Houston commuters and graffiti gurus alike became familiar with the tag after it remained painted across the Union Pacific Bridge for a decade. However, last year an Instagram page supposedly run by the art's original creator seemed to hint that the 'Be Someone' motto's time was at an end. The tag suddenly returned to the bridge this past weekend without any notice from the same Instagram page. Some speculate that a new generation of graffiti artists have brought the beloved phrase back to the site for good, but only time will tell. (Houston Chronicle)
- A confrontation that started as a fender bender ended in the shooting of a dog in a neighborhood in Southwest Houston. Emanuel Bonilla, 65, was backing out of his driveway when he bumped into his neighbor's vehicle. An argument broke out, and the neighbor's dog came out onto the porch only for Emanuel to target its ears with a firearm. The dog was shot twice in the ears but will survive. HPD who were called to the scene discovered Bonilla was intoxicated and ended up charging him with a DWI. You would think it would be difficult to get a DWI without leaving your own driveway.
