🌱 The Seawall Strikes + Citgo 6 Return Home

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Today, we'll look at:

  • A Galveston seawall victim.
  • The Citgo 6 are finally released.
  • A suspect HPD crash.

But first, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 88 Low: 62.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. A woman got herself trapped upside down in the Galveston seawall for over an hour Sunday morning. Police responders say she dropped something in the crevice space and climbed down to look for it. It was then that she accidentally fell into the crevice, wedging herself upside down up to her knees. Eventually, a ladder truck was put to use in order to help free her. An ambulance tended to her minor injuries after the incident. Whatever item she lost, she sure found a great story to replace it. (ABC13)
  2. Houston's remaining Citgo 6 members were freed from Venezuelan prison this past Saturday after 5 years of confinement. The Citgo 6 were a group of Houston oil executives who found themselves arrested without due process in 2017. The executives were lured to Venezuela by a supposed budget meeting that turned out to be a facade for an unlawful arrest. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro released the executives in exchange for clemency for two of his family members who were jailed in the U.S. on drug smuggling convictions. President Joe Biden said, "These individuals will soon be reunited with their families and back in the arms of their loved ones where they belong. We celebrate that seven families will be whole once more." (Houston Chronicle)
  3. Two off-duty deputies crashed into a wall on the Katy freeway at 3 a.m. and were ejected from their vehicle. Another vehicle was involved in the crash, but the driver thankfully avoided injury. The two deputies were rushed to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. However, they have since been stabilized. The sheer size of the crash scene saw all westbound lanes of the Katy freeway closed yesterday. HPD Commander Chaney said there was no evidence of anything alcohol-related being involved in the crash. Nothing to see here, just two sober off-duty cops driving home without their seatbelts on at 3 a.m. on a Saturday night. (KHOU11)
  4. Houstonians should thank The Buffalo Bayou Partnership and the Kinder Foundation for advocating for equality across all Houston neighborhoods. The Kinder Foundation recently donated $100 million towards the construction of multiple parks for the East End of the bayou near Fifth Ward. An overview of the park plan states, "All over the world, great cities are reinventing themselves around their waterfronts. Think of New York's harbor, Chicago's lakefront, Baltimore's inner harbor, San Francisco's bay, Barcelona's seafront, Paris' Seine riverfront, and London's South Bank and Docklands." Not only will this new park project bring additional esteem to one of Houston's greatest natural features: it will do so while adding value to one of Houston's historically poorest neighborhoods. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. Harris County leaders are still in a standoff over the 2023 county budget. The altercation began when Republican commissioners failed to show up for the 2023 county budget vote. They have continued to fail to show up for multiple rescheduled vote meetings in order to take advantage of legislation that says the county budget from last year will remain the same if a new budget is not agreed upon. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo took to twitter to call them out posting that Harris County will be forced to cut medical services for 10,000 patients, $23 million in flood mitigation, and $42 million for the sheriff's office if the no-shows continue. Last year's budget will go into effect if a decision is not reached by October 28. (KHOU.com)
