Shane T. Frank, COO, on Tennis Strategy & Tactics

Shane T. Frank writes about different tennis strategies and tactics you can use to improve your game.

Tennis is a game of strategy, endurance, and tactical work. It’s not uncommon for a player to lose focus on the strategic and tactical efforts behind a match against an opponent. Whether you’re a master player, or just beginning, the strategy behind your game is essential to your success. They’ll not only assist in improving your gameplay, but give you the tools to beat your opponent during a heated match. If you’re an avid tennis player or thinking about taking the game up as a fun hobby, consider some of these steps to improve your strategy:

Be Consistent
Consistency is key in the game of tennis. All too often, players become focused on the attack, and sending powerful returns back to their opponent, without considering a tactical approach. Instead of constantly focusing on the power of your return or serve, focus on the strategy behind how you should hit the ball. Short returns are okay and are sometimes necessary during a match. Have patience; don’t jump the gun and try to win the point too early. Maintain accuracy and placement when sending the ball back for a return to your opponent.

Focus on the Depth of Your Shot
The depth of your shot can vary depending on where your opponent is. However, it’s important to know when deep shots are a useful tool. More than likely, sending a deep shot back to your opponent will land them on their back-foot, thus limiting their return angle and sometimes their power and accuracy. Shots with depth also give you more time to position yourself for your opponents return. Consider this: when your opponent is sending their return close to the net (on a short shot) it will get back to you a lot quicker than it would at the end of the court. This gives you less time to prepare and may make it more difficult for you to reach the ball and send your return.

Pinpoint Opponent Weaknesses
Your opponent's weakness are often your strengths. Every player has their weak points, and their opponent is smart to notice them and use them to their advantage. Identify your opponent's weak points, and use them in your strategy. For example, if your opponent has a weak backhand, aim your shots towards that weakness.

There’s a lot more to the game of tennis than sending a ball back and forth. Use these strategic tips to improve your game, and chances of winning during a match.
