Shane T. Frank, Houston, COO, on Tennis Rules

Shane T. Frank shares a quick guide to playing the game of tennis.

Tennis is a sport that takes strength, speed and agility in order to fully accomplish it. While its origin is out of England, the sport is widely played throughout many different countries across the world. From small games among friends to professional tennis matches and tournaments, tennis is a past time that will likely never fade.

The game takes practice and patience to master as the skills required don't usually come overnight. Aside from the skill set needed for tennis, the first step to a successful game is knowing the rules; which for some, may not be common knowledge. A tennis match can be played in two different ways; between two individual players, known as a single, or two teams, with a total of four players, known as a double.

The game begins at the start of a serve when the ball officially goes into play between the opponents. When the ball is received and played back to the opposing side, the game is considered to be in the rally phase, and both players (or teams), will strategically send the ball back and forth across the court until it lands outside of the court. Generally, each player can only hit the ball once to return it to their opponent; the return should always be sent back with a strategic form to reach the goal of successfully sending it passed the opponent and placing numbers on the scoreboard. Aside from sending the ball outside the court to score, should a player hit the net on a return, or let the ball bounce more than once, the opponent will take the point.

Scoring is another essential part of the game, and without a proper understanding of it, players may become confused about what actually ends a game. Each tennis match is made up of three to five sets, and each set is made up of 6 games. A game within a set is won when a player obtains four points, with a two-point difference over the opponent. When a player wins two out of three or three out of five sets, they have won the match. Scoring each set is based on how many sets within the match are won. This is where it can get slightly complicated, as scoring for tennis is vastly different than many other major sports.

The strategy behind a game is much more than sending a ball back and forth across a court. Players need to use quick judgment based on their opponents positioning and skill to successfully win the entire match.
