Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Three Men in Shooting Death of 4-Year Old Girl

Three are charged with capital murder, and could get life in prison, or the death penalty if convicted.

HOUSTON, TX -- The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has arrested and charged three men in the shooting that killed 4-year old Ava Castillo and injured her sister Betsida Castillo, 10, and mother Diana Gomez.

The three men, whose identity hasn’t been released, are charged with capital murder, which carries a possible sentence of life in prison, or the death penalty.

Castillo was killed on Nov. 14, and her mother and sister were shot when three men came at them, and tried to rob them as as they unloaded groceries at their Greenspoint apartment complex.

Gomez never had time to react when they demanded her purse.

As she reached to hand it over, one of the men pulled a gun out and began shooting at them, took her purse, and fled in a dark colored car, which had been reported stolen earlier that same day.

Gomez was shot seven times, while Betsida was grazed and only slightly injured.

However, Ava, who was in her mother's arms, was mortally wounded, and died at the hospital a short time later.

On Nov. 15, a day after the shooting, deputies detained a person of interest they believed was involved in the killing, but he was later released.

On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced they were questioning several suspects about the shooting.

However, it’s not known if these are the same suspects who were charged.
