🌱 Suits N' Roses + Dirty Dining

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Let's dive into:

  • Guns N' Roses suing a local store for copyright infringement.
  • New eats in Memorial City.
  • The Houston restaurants with the most health violations in 2022.

But first, today's weather:

Very warm. High: 82 Low: 68.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Famous band Guns N' Roses is suing a Houston-based gun and flower merchant for copyright infringement for the name of their online shop called "texasgunsandroses.com". The rock band claims that the shop is confusing consumers that the band may somehow be involved with the store. Furthermore, they say that the shop has damaged the band's reputation. Attorney for the online store David Clark says, "There is no confusion between the brands. The band and its attorneys have admitted that. We will kindly respond as needed, and we will be fighting back." Despite Clark's claims, Guns N' Roses wishes for the store to discontinue the use of their current name.(CultureMap Houston)
  2. Two new restaurants featuring Detroit-style pizza and award-winning burgers are coming to the Memorial City area in the spring of 2023. Pincho is a Florida-based burger restaurant that was recently named the "Best Burger in South Florida" by the Miami New Times. Aside from made-to-order burgers, their menu features meat plates like pollo asado and various kebabs with rice, salads, hot dogs, and chicken sandwiches. The new location will be their first outside of Florida. Meanwhile, Via 313 is a Detroit-style pizza joint with locations in Austin, Round Rock, and San Antonio. They specialize in Detroit's famous rectangular shaped deep dish pizza as well as "bar style" crispy, thin-crust pies.(Houston Chronicle)
  3. Data from the Houston Health Department's 2022 restaurant inspections reveals the five restaurants with the most health violations this year. Coming in at number 5 is Shahnai restaurant on Hillcroft. They had a total of 65 violations throughout the year including roaches, expired food handler's certificates, and a pungent restroom odor. 888 Bistro on El Camino Real Blvd. claimed the number 4 spot with 68 violations many of which had to do with poor building maintenance. Taste Bar & Kitchen on Bagby took the number 3 spot and is now permanently closed. At number 2, The Catch on South Post Oak had 79 violations including poor food storage and the presence of strange residue in multiple areas. Finally, the big winner was Lucky Village Chinese Buffet on Westheimer road with 93 violations. Among the violations was the use of fly sticky traps in non-permitted areas, a freezer door that wouldn't close, and the dish washing machine failing to automatically dispense sanitizing solution. 4. A Houston family got more than they bargained for at breakfast after a car crashed through their local Denny's dining space. The crash was caused by a handicap woman who thought her car was in reverse but managed to hit the gas and accelerate forward instead. The car did not enter the Denny's building, however, the force of the crash did send a table careening towards the family. A couple of family members mentioned they had slight pain, but no one was taken to the hospital. (KTRK-TV)
  5. Art on the Avenue hosted its 25th anniversary art party featuring nearly 500 works from 250 artists. More than 850 guests attended the event over two nights making close to $300,000 in art purchases, some of which will go towards developing affordable housing for artists. The event featured a music ensemble from Losty Los of the Waxaholics as well as a performance from the Two Star Symphony: a strange pairing of a DJ set and symphony performance. Art pieces were selected for first, second, and third place by a guest juror from Project Row Houses.(PaperCity Magazine)
