(Patch Media)

Good morning, Houston. It's Chris, here with your Wednesday edition of the Houston Daily. Today, we'll look at updates on...

  • The best new Houston bars of 2022.
  • Tips for crushing your New Year's resolutions.
  • A raucous new play.

But first, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 73 Low: 46.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our readers to local businesses they need to know. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories in Houston today:

  1. You might have a favorite Houston watering hole, but it never hurts to try something new for a change: here are the best new Houston bars of 2022. Topping off the list, Betelgeuse Betelgeuse on Washington is themed for Halloween 365 days a year. They also offer a handful of unique cocktails such as the Black Lemon Drop which is a darker take on the long time favorite. As far as food is concerned, Betelgeuse provides a delicious selection of some of the best pizzas you'll ever find at a bar as well as a pizza oven baked hamburger. In case you're in the mood for something more secluded, Bandista on Lamar is hidden behind a secret entrance inside the Four Seasons hotel. While the drinks come with a price tag befitting of their location, this neo-speakeasy delivers a level of presentation that's hard to match. For more captivating new bars, check the link. 2. Falling short of New Year's resolutions and goals is something to which we can all relate, so take some advice from a professional counselor on how to crush your resolutions in 2023. Dr. Shana D. Lewis recommends approaching goals with the use of the apt acronym N.E.W. Y.E.A.R. N stands for "No resolutions!" as it's better to think of these goals as a revolution for your life. E is a reminder to "Evaluate" your ultimate life goals. W is for "Write it down." Y tells you to "Yell it to somebody" as informing others of your goals keeps you accountable. E is one of the hard ones, suggesting you "Eliminate" people, places, and things in your life that don't align with your goals. A stands for the importance of "Always including a self-care plan to sustain your goals." Lastly, R is for "Redesign" as you should evaluate your goals again every 90 days to gauge progress and make changes where necessary. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  3. Drunk Shakespeare is a Houston comedy production where an actor drinks five shots of liquor and attempts to lead a cast through a 90 minute session of a Shakespeare play. The show will be put on at the new venue The Emerald Theater at One Market Square Jan. 12 through Apr. 29. As you might expect, the play features heavy improvisation, liberal departures from the source material, pop culture references, and more. If you enjoy watching others take flight from the the seat of their pants, this is the show for you. (CultureMap Houston)
  4. G Contemporary Art Gallery is presenting a free exhibit called "Politics of SEX" from Jan. 7 through Jan. 28. The exhibition features Houston artists who have put on displays revolving around the diversity of sexual identity and relationships. The witty displays seek to tear down sexual myths by employing comedy, games, and other artistic strategies. Additionally, they comment on the current political culture surrounding sex, gender, reproductive rights, and the power dynamics between those who seek to control these topics. (CultureMap Houston)
  5. The United States was faced with a harsh reminder of the threat of cardiac arrest when NFL player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field during Monday night football. Thankfully, you can be part of the solution by learning CPR. Organizations across Houston offer courses including hospitals, YMCA's, American Red Cross chapters, and more. Sudden cardiac arrest is the cause of death for over 350,000 Americans every year. However, victims of cardiac arrest are two or three times more likely to survive if they receive CPR within minutes of the event. The robbery suspects were captured on surveillance video from inside of the car and you could be eligible for a $5,000 reward from Crime Stoppers for information leading to their arrest.
