According to the study, 81 Texas hospitals received an A rating, followed by 53 hospitals with a B rating, 74 that earned a C, and four that received a D rating.

Those hospitals receiving a D rating were St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Houston; East Texas Medical Center in Tyler; Southwest General Hospital in San Antonio, and Baptist Beaumont Hospital of Southeast Texas.

The Leapfrog Group used several criteria to rate the hospitals, including medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

According to the organization, more than 1,000 Americans die each day from preventable hospital errors. Hospitals given a B rating by Leapfrog had a 9 percent higher risk of avoidable death than A hospitals. That number jumps to 35 percent in C hospitals and 50 percent higher in D and F hospitals.

Hospitals in Maine scored the highest, with Wisconsin, Hawaii, Oregon and Idaho rounding out the top five.

However, there were a number of states that tied, or had comparable results for their ratings.

For instance, Ohio and Kansas tied at 13, while Utah and South Carolina tied at No. 17.

Kentucky and Nebraska tied at No. 32, Connecticut and Arkansas tied at No. 38, and Alaska, North Dakota, Delaware and District of Columbia all tied at No. 47 on the list.

The only state that wasn’t listed, was Maryland, which according to the Leapfrog Group does not publicly report their safety data to the state.
