Here are the top stories today in Houston:
1. Despite protests, the National Rifle Association began its annual convention in Houston on Friday, three days after a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school on the other side of the state. The incident has prompted a national debate to begin anew over gun violence. (Associated Press)
2. Crafty Crab is planning to open in League City at 112 North Gulf Freeway. An opening date has not been released. The seafood restaurant, which already has Houston and Pearland locations, serves catfish, shrimp, oysters, lobster and crab in a variety of styles. (Community Impact News)
3. Former President Trump spoke at the NRA convention in Houston on Friday just before 5 p.m. He acknowledged the Uvalde tragedy, and asked for a moment of silence as he read the names of the 21 victims. The former president then echoed Texas Governor Abbott's claim that the gunman's actions were a mental health issue and not an issue with gun access. (ABC 13)
4. In the aftermath of the Uvalde, Texas school shooting that left 19 students and two adults dead, social media threats continue to rise against Greater Houston schools. Despite increased security at several districts across the Greater Houston area, threats have also increased. (KHOU 11)
5. A man accused of sexually assaulting a child in April of 2020 has yet to be caught, according to the Houston Police Department. Fugitive Dreykeydrick Lee Clark, 20, has been charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14 years of age. Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 for information leading to his arrest. - City of Houston's primary animal shelter, BARC, is hoping to clear its cages with a $5 adoption event today and Sunday. (CultureMap Houston)
- Teachers across the country gathered in Houston, furious that the NRA Convention is being held, and called for stricter gun laws on Friday. (Fox 26 Houston)
