Here are the top stories in Houston today:
- Texas hospitals will not need to provide emergency abortions after a Texas judge ruled that the Biden Administration's attempts to authorize such practices goes beyond the scope of federal law. Appointed by former President Donald Trump, Judge James Wesley Hendrix has decided that the emergency abortion guidance of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services ought to be ignored. This news comes after reports of some hospitals turning away pregnant patients with signs of complications due to fears of breaking Texas' stringent abortion laws. The statewide banning of nearly every kind of abortion goes into effect today. (ABC13)
- A homeless housing development in Midtown was awarded over $18 million in funding, but it's unclear if the money is really for a good cause. The development will provide 149 units of supportive housing when it is finished. However, some Houston City Council members have reservations about the funding due to the NHP Foundation's involvement as a developer. Previously, the NHP allowed Cleme Manor, a Fifth Ward apartment complex for which they were responsible, to suffer extended power outages and rampant infestations. A former resident of the complex, Delores Mcgruder, said, "The faces changed, but the attitude and disrespect for residents never has. They're all talking about homelessness, but if you live at Cleme Manor you feel like you're homeless." (Houston Chronicle)
- A new study places Houston as the number one city in America for household infestations. The study was based off of data taken from the American Housing Survey. Ultimately, the data revealed that in the past year 14.9 percent of Houston homes have also been a home to rats, cockroaches, mold, or mice. If that seems like a high percentage, it's because it is. While Houston's infestation share is only 2 percent higher than infested city runner-up New Orleans, it's 12 percent higher than the 25th most infested city: Seattle. Just in case you didn't love the humid weather for providing you with swampy underwear, abundant bugs and rodents can provide you with another reason to worship the heat. (Houstonia Magazine)
- Shaq is bringing his restaurant Big Chicken to Texas, and Houston is the first city to receive a location. Shaq's Big Chicken is going up at Westheimer and South Gessner and will feature chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders (tendies!), popcorn chicken, and complimentary sides and sauces. The restaurant's menu items are named after close friends of the former NBA athlete as well as alternative names he once went by during his professional basketball career. Funny enough, the restaurant also offers a cookie that's as big as the circumference of an NBA basketball. Yea, I'm going to need a hoop-sized glass of milk with that. (KHOU.com)
- A member of Houston's 103 gang was sentenced to life in prison for killing an innocent bystander in a daytime drive-by shooting. District Attorney Kim Ogg said, "Gangs are violent and reckless and, like in this case, sometimes take the lives of people who are completely innocent. Gangs terrorize communities and it is heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable that Mr. Johnson was killed as he walked home from work." Convicted gang member Watson was said to have viewed the life of Sam Johnson, whom he killed, as collateral damage in the gang war battlefield. (KPRC Click2Houston)
