This time of year is the perfect reminder of our pride and enthusiasm for the University of Houston-Downtown.

Homecoming allows for students, faculty and staff to celebrate the accomplishments and history of our University. We also welcome alumni back to their alma mater to share in the experience. We are so grateful, especially after the challenges of the last few semesters, to partake in this annual tradition with many outstanding activities planned.

As part of today’s kickoff to Homecoming week, I welcomed Gators to the President’s BBQ on the South Deck. More celebrations fill the week with mum making parties, a pep rally, a comedy showcase, a virtual game night and more. The week will culminate on Saturday, October 16 with Tail-Gatoring from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which will emulate a traditional tailgate cook-off complete with food, contests and an all-around good time. Visit our Homecoming website for details and dates.

Also on this upcoming Saturday, the University will host a Food Fair in the Daly Lot in partnership with Qatar Charity and a sister institution's Diplomacy Institute from noon to 4 p.m. providing free groceries to students, faculty, staff and community members.

Homecoming 2021 also marks another type of homecoming for UHD. Our academic year's soft opening has concluded, and UHD has resumed classes to their original schedules, and our faculty and staff return to traditional office hours.

As mentioned earlier, I encourage practicing caution and courtesy as we transition back to working and learning on campus. We are still a mask-friendly University, and we encourage wearing them on campus. Likewise, social distancing is also recommended. The UHD campus will continue to host hand sanitizer stations and provide masks upon request. For your convenience, the Curative testing kiosk outside the Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center is still open, seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and free of charge.

Safety is, and always will be, of UHD's utmost concern.

I look forward to the memories we will create this Homecoming Week and the promising year we have ahead of us – together.

Sincerely,

Loren J. Blanchard, Ph.D. President, University of Houston-Downtown
