Here are the top stories in Houston today:
- It's election day in Houston and with over 700 polling locations to choose from there's no excuse for missing your opportunity to cast a ballot. All polling facilities will remain open until 7 p.m. tonight, so even day job employees have an opportunity to get their vote in after hours. Furthermore, the Houston Metro is offering free rides to polling stations across all of their services. In order to take advantage of the ride, you need only tell your Metro operator the name of the polling facility you are heading to or returning from. Early morning reports say that the Anderson Academy polling place as well as the African American Library polls both have little to no line. (Houston Chronicle)
- A record-breaking Powerball jackpot drawing was delayed by nearly 10 hours due to an issue processing sales. Numbers for the drawing ended up being white balls 10, 33, 41, 47 and 56, and red Powerball 10. Updated calculations put the jackpot at an astounding $2.04 billion this morning: $400 million greater than the previous largest jackpot. The Multi-State Lottery Association addressed the delay, saying, "Powerball requires all 48 participating lotteries to submit their sales and play data prior to the winning numbers being selected. Once Powerball receives the outstanding submission, the drawing can proceed." However, some bystanders say the delay is evidence of jackpot rigging. (Click2Houston)
- Amazon's electric delivery vans are coming to Houston just in time for the holiday season. The house name company began rolling out electric delivery vans back in July of this year and now has a total of around 1,000 in their fleet in an effort to reduce their carbon footprint. This number pales in comparison to the company's overarching goal of having 100,000 such vehicles in service by 2030. Aside from the electric engine, the new vans also come with a number of updated features including greater cargo space, Alexa-enabled navigation, and advanced safety options such as automatic emergency braking. Despite these green-minded rollouts, Amazon's carbon footprint has increased over 10 percent year after year since 2019 as the business continues to grow. (Houston Chronicle)
- As the third largest art market in the country, Houston provides a unique opportunity for building an art collection if you know how to get started. The first thing to do is become more knowledgeable about art in general by visiting galleries, exposing yourself to different styles, meeting other art fanatics, and discovering what you like. Thankfully, Houston's Museum of Fine Arts makes all of the above easy. Once you know what you want, establish a focus for your collection. For example, you might want to pick up work by a couple of select artists or focus on a specific genre such as landscapes. Now that you have your collection plans drawn up, the only things left to do are establish a budget, make purchases, document your collection, and have fun hunting. As with most things, collecting art is more about the journey than the destination. (365 Things to Do in Houston)
- The stepfather of two Cypress twin teens who escaped an abusive home last week was returned to Houston from Louisiana this past weekend. He has been charged with continuous assault of a family member and had his bond set at $500,000. The twins were kept captive by their mother and stepfather in a laundry room without access to food, water, or a bathroom. They say their mother would beat them with curtain rods and extension cords as well as poured bleach down their throats and on their genitals. Meanwhile, the stepfather forced them to eat over 20 Benadryl tablets in a single sitting to make them sleep. However, child psychologists say that the twins can recover from the abuse if they're provided with proper help. (KHOU.com)
