Waites Slaying: Murder Suspect's Bond Set At $1 Million

Jordan Potts was arrested in Oregon on Sept. 1 and charged in the killing of Shawtyeria Waites.

HOUSTON, TX — A man charged with murder in the killing of a woman last seen at his southwest Houston apartment had his bail set at $1 million.

Jordan Potts, 26, appeared in the 338th District Court on Wednesday after being extradited from Oregon. He is charged in the slaying of Shawtyeria Waites, 21, who went missing and was last seen at Potts' apartment at 8950 Chimney Rock Road on July 25.

A friend said she dropped Waites off at the apartment at approximately 8 p.m. July 25 to meet a man, and police determined that man to be Potts through witness statements, video surveillance and leasing records, according to court documents. Police said they believe the two met online or through a dating app.

Police obtained search warrants for Potts' apartment and car and found evidence of blood in the trunk of Potts' car on Aug. 19, according to court documents.

On Aug. 27, authorities found human remains off Katy Freeway in Brookshire, Texas, and they were determined to likely be Waites' based on the clothing and artificial fingernails found with the body, court documents show.

Potts was arrested by the Gresham Police Department in Gresham, Oregon, on Sept. 1.
