Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Recent thunderstorms have Houston's health advisors concerned about the dangers of West Nile virus. The inundation of Houston this past week is sure to increase the number of free-standing water sites throughout Bayou City, providing the perfect breeding grounds for mosquitos. Each year, health officials generally warn Houstonians about the dangers of West Nile sometime between July and October. The warning comes especially late this year due to an extended drought that has severely reduced the presence of mosquitos across town. Nonetheless, there has been one reported case of West Nile here so far. (Houston Public Media)
  2. Battleship Texas, the final battleship from Texas remaining that served in both World Wars, is headed to Galveston for $35 million in repairs this Wednesday. The ship will be pulled from the famous San Jacinto battleground site in La Porte by tugboats and, eventually, placed in a new home. Battleship Texas has long served as a memorable historical site for Houstonians to visit, but the park has never generated the number of visitors necessary to make the presence of the ship in La Porte viable. Repairs are required due to decades of hull decomposition caused by salt and silt. The battleship's final destination remains undecided as of yet. (KHOU11)
  3. Senior Research Scientist Dr. Rosario Sanchez at the Texas A&M Water Resources Institute warns that extended drought conditions are the "new normal." She explained, "We're seeing this all over the world, it's not just the Rio Grande, it's not just Texas, it's not just the U.S. We've seen what is going on in Europe, in Asia, Australia, Southern Latin America; everywhere it's happening." She went on to mention that the cost of water is something that many urban citizens overlook. Whereas a half-century ago people had a better understanding of the value of constant access to water, now it's seen as a given. Unfortunately, Sanchez warns, it doesn't look like that will be the case forever. (Houston Public Media)
  4. A new bike lane stretching from Brays Bayou to NRG Park will offer rodeo-goers another method of accessing the fair festivities in 2023. The bike lane's construction is thanks to BikeHouston and will be built by extending current sidewalks in the area about five feet. While the bike lane was announced just prior to this year's rodeo season, it will finally be finished just before the end of this year. That leaves you with at least a couple of months to give it a few trial runs before the inevitable mayhem that will be the 2023 Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  5. YMCA Houston serves over 8,000 local youth with after-school programs and learning opportunities every school year. YMCA Executive Director of Youth Development Larry Taylor said, "The YMCA's programs invite kids to not only fall in love with learning activities but also nurture a sense of belonging and confidence to help develop strong relationships with others in the community." Available fall activities include after-school child care, youth sports, adaptive programs as well as a miracle league for children with disabilities, and community initiatives. Your child's intellectual and physical development doesn't have to stop when the final school bell rings. Give your local Y a call today to learn more. (Woodlands Online)
