Here are the top stories in Houston today:
- Left out to dry this Valentine's Day? It may be time to give the new Houston dating app Wingr a try. The name of the dating app is derived from an available function that allows you to make your friends into online matchmakers for you. In other words, the app allows you to attach to someone else's profile and let them match you up with someone they believe aligns with your tastes. Other significant features include a pushback against immediate swiping culture through more thorough profile features as well as a color function that tells others on the app what kind of mood you're in. For example, other messengers will receive the color red from you when you're feeling flirtatious. Houston-owned Wingr has been around for a year now on the Apple store and plans to release for Android in March. (KHOU.com)
- HPD responded to an incident in the 1300 blocks of Green Parkway after a couple claimed two women threatened to shoot them for "making too much noise during sex." Police responded to the incident on Monday at 6:30 a.m. Suspects Treasure Joann Bibbs, 21, and Alexis Zachkaria Davis, 25 have since been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Both suspects pointed the same gun at the couple during the interaction. The couple who was held at gunpoint also claim that the suspects have repeatedly left notes on their door. They said the notes claimed that Treasure and Alexis would kill them and their children if they don't quiet down during coitus. (KPRC Click2Houston)
- West University Place council members discussed an update of the entire city's storm water drainage system. However, the overhaul could cost up to $500 million. Despite the extensive cost, an engineering firm hired to research the effect of the updates said that while updates would help, they wouldn't solve the root issue of storm water drainage problems. The city of Houston is currently attempting to meet the minimum standard for a two-year storm design. This project is part of meeting the city's larger goal, but work must be done on the east side of Houston as well. For now, West University Place city council will continue to review preliminary engineering reports before coming to a decision by the end of March. (Community Impact Newspaper)
- A Houston ISD teacher at Kashmere High School is being investigated by police after parents reported that their children were assaulted by him. The gym teacher in question supposedly bit one child's leg. When another student ran to help the child being bitten, the teacher hit him over the head with a tennis racket. The incident escalated out of an argument about whether the two kids had stolen a tennis ball. The involved teacher has been reassigned by the school while the investigation is pending. Houston ISD spokesperson Joseph Sam said, "We still need to make sure this happened and that this wasn't a he said, she said situation. They're going through the video footage, going through to see exactly what took place." (Houston Public Media)
- The 9th annual Truffle Masters ceremony will be held on Monday, March 6 at the Revaire. This chef studded event brings together the top cooks in Houston for a competition to see who can impress a panel of judges the most. Previous Truffle Masters shows have featured decadent foods such as green tea soufflé cheesecake with truffle ice-cream, truffle and fatty tuna hand rolls, and honey tea truffle butter chicken biscuits. Attendees of the event also get a say by form of a vote that will be tallied for the People's Choice award. Guests will have access to the same delicious foods that the judges will be eating, but the experience comes at a hefty price of $295 for general admission. After all, truffle is one of the most expensive foods you can buy. (Eater Houston)
