World Naked Gardening Day: Houston Sprouts As Top Naked Gardening Spot In 2017

HOUSTON, TX — Don’t look now (no, seriously, don’t look), but Houston is the top spot to observe World Naked Gardening Day for 2017.

Yes, it’s a real thing.

Since 2005, Americans everywhere have tossed their garments on the first weekend in May, and taken to troweling, hoeing, shoveling and planting in the buff.

According to Austin-based lawnstarter.com, the Bayou City takes the top spot for world Naked Gardening Day, edging out Dallas/Fort Worth at No. 2 and Austin, which comes in at a respectable No.7 out of a possible 15 cities nationwide.

Lawnstarter.com ranked the top 15 cities in the U.S. for World Naked Gardening Day. Those cities include:

• Houston, TX
• Dallas/Fort Worth TX
• Baton Rouge, LA
• Omaha, NE
• Tulsa, OK
• Oklahoma City OK
• Austin, TX
• Springfield, MO
• McAllen, TX
• Little Rock, AR
• Wichita, KS
• San Antonio, TX
• Kansas City, MO
• Minneapolis, MN
• Des Moines, IA

The cities were ranked based entirely on weather, with high temperatures, humidity cloudiness and wind speed used as qualifiers.

What wasn’t taken into account to obtain these rankings were: fire ants, mosquitoes, poison ivy, spiders and snakes, which gardeners despise even when fully clothed.

Ironically, World Naked Gardening Day falls on May 6, the day after Cinco de Mayo, so some of that behavior could be post-celebratory, but I digress.

World Naked Gardening Day has good intentions, and began as a project of the Body Freedom Collaborative, which promotes the acceptance of non-sexual nudity.

It is designed to be a non-political event that promotes a positive body image, and above all it suppose to be practiced in one’s own yard, and not the public botanical garden

Thus, World Naked Gardening Day is suppose to help us humans get in touch with our natural selves, and with nature itself, all in a non-sexual non-political manner. Period.

While birthday suits are encouraged, gloves, hats and or shoes are practical, as is a little insect repellant or a liberal application of sunscreen.
