Houston Area Woman Announces Bid To Run Against Ted Cruz In 2018
Irasema Hernandez organizes a baseball league in nearby Pasadena, says she drew inspiration from former presidential candidate

HOUSTON, TX β Irasema Hernandez announced her Democratic bid to run for United States Senate in 2018, which is currently held by Republican Ted Cruz. She drew inspiration from Senator Bernie Sanders' calling for more grass roots candidates to run for political office, especially at the national level.
"Midterm Election is approaching in 2018 and we need to take back our seat from Sen. Ted Cruz," it states on her crowdfunding page. "We also need more people that are Progressive and forward-thinking to run against corporate establishment politicians in Congress.
Cruz is a junior senator who will complete his first term in 2018. Stefano de Stefano announced last month that he'll challenge Cruz in the Republican primary in the midterm cycle.

Hernandez, who goes by "Sema," released a statement on her reasoning behind throwing her name in the hat.
"I was inspired by Sen. Bernie Sanders to run for office, he urged all of us to be politically active and run for office. We need regular people to represent us on all levels of government, not corporations," Hernandez said in a statement.

According to Hernandez's biography on her fundraising page, the 32-year-old is a "U.S. Citizen, daughter of immigrants, a wife, mother of four boys, baseball coach, small business owner, community volunteer, activist, Democratic Socialist and Berniecrat."
Hernandez said her candidacy isnβt about political 'arty, "itβs about the People, itβs about you."
On her fundraising page crowd pac.com, Hernandez has raised $80 on six donations with an initial goal of $10,000 β which should probably need to be considerably more considering Cruz's popularity and firepower in Texas, a strong red state.
Bullet points on her platform include, but aren't limited to:
- Strengthen the E.P.A.
- Social Justice Reform
- Criminal Justice Reform
- Police Reform
- No Private Prisons
