LSC : Lone Star College Receives $2 Million Grant To Aid Institutions With COVID-19 Mitigation Strategies

The U.S. Dept. of Education awarded Lone Star College $2,071,860 under the CARES Act through the Institutional Resilience and Expanded Postsecondary Opportunity (IREPO) grant program to address the greatest unmet needs related to the pandemic. These resources enable institutions to resume or enhance in-person and online operations and implement COVID-19 mitigation strategies.

“Lone Star College is committed to providing the tools students need to be successful,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “This new innovative program will ensure our students have access to the resources they need to complete their degree.”

LSC will use the funds to develop the Extended Classrooms Expanded Opportunities (ECEO) project which will allow LSC to safely resume operations while expanding educational opportunities and includes two evidence-based strategies. The first is to convert regular classrooms into technology enabled extended classrooms (E-Classrooms) and the second provides professional development to ensure a successful learning environment.

“Investing in Texas higher education will provide our students with invaluable skills and resources now and keep Texas’ economy strong in the future,” said Sen. John Cornyn. “I applaud this announcement and will continue to do everything I can to help students at Lone Star College.”

This training for the implementation of E-Classrooms into the curriculum will increase the resiliency of LSC and ensure that instruction can quickly be transformed during any future disruption in educational services. ECEO will allow LSC to safely resume operations while expanding academic opportunities for all students.

In all, the U.S. Dept. of Education awarded 62 institutions or consortiums more than $112 million in financial support. Of those institutions, more than half are community colleges, historically black colleges and universities, minority-serving or serve rural students.
