Friends Hold Fundraiser to Help Dayton Family After Tragic Accident

Devening Family was on their way to a party in Huffman when they were hit head-on, on Dec. 3.

HUFFMAN, TX -- Family and friends of a Dayton family involved in a tragic car accident on Dec. 3, hosted a benefit on Wednesday to raise money for mounting medical expenses.

William Devening, his family and a family friend, were on their way to a Christmas party in Huffman when they were involved in a horrible traffic accident on FM 1960.

According to police, a car veered out of its lane, hitting the Devenings vehicle and pushing them into oncoming traffic.

William Devening, his wife, Cynthia, and their 10-year-old daughter were all transported to the hospital with serious injuries, but 25-year-old Courtney Anderson, and the Devening’s 7-year-old son, Clifton were killed.

“It’s devastating. I have a 15-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter and I can’t imagine losing one of my children,” Steve Cosby told KPRC.

Cosby, who is part of the nonprofit organization called Texas Adaptive Aquatics, doesn’t know he Devening family, but when the group heard about the accident, they helped family friends organize a benefit.

The benefit was held at The Tin Cup Sports Bar in Huffman, and included food for $20 a plate, and an auction to raise money for medical expenses.

William’s wife, Cynthia Devening and their daughter were released Wednesday -- the day of the event -- but William, who is a decorated combat Marine veteran, has some significant injuries that will take time to heal.
