Repairs To Flooded LSC-Kingwood Campus To Cost $10 Million

KINGWOOD, TX — Officials with the Lone Star College-Kingwood campus said Friday that damages to several campus buildings during Hurricane Harvey will cost more than $10 million to remediate and repair.

Six of the nine buildings on the the LSC-Kingwood campus were flooded with raw sewage after the San Jacinto River breached its banks and pushed raw sewage from a nearby treatment facility, downstream.

The sewage flooded the first floor of six campus buildings, where it remained for several days.

LSC-Kingwood President Katherine Persson, provided an update on the damages on Friday, said everything that was on the first floor of those flooded buildings were destroyed.

As a result, classes at the college won’t be resuming for a while, and Persson said they are working with faculty to see if those classes can be taught in an online format, KTRK reported.

The college employs about 1,200 faculty who are responsible for instruction of about 13,000 students.

Persson said about 400 of the colleges 1,275 class section are online right now.

The other concern is for those students who may have lost their home in the flooding, or those who may not have access to internet access for online classes.

In either case, Persson urged students to contact the college to make online arrangements or receive a refund.
