First, today's weather:
Clear throughout the day. High: 92 Low: 74.
Here are the top stories today in Irving:
- Tragic news from the Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS): The agency reported Friday 16 new COVID-19 related deaths in the county. One of the casualties was a child not yet one year old. Although DCHHS notes that the young boy had underlying health complications, the CDC still urges parents to vaccinate eligible children, keep them in masks and practice social distancing. (WFAA.com)
- Head over to CultureMap to find out this week's five most-read stories. Topping the charts is news about The Grandscape Ferris wheel in The Colony, which opened on Friday. The nearly 200-foot tall attraction rivals the state fair's Texas Star. Other must-reads include lengthening commute times in North Texas and where you can sleep in a shipping container (should you be so inclined). (CultureMap Dallas)
- Rising property values mean an increase in taxes for homeowners in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Both municipalities have lowered property tax rates, but not enough to counter the burden fully. Experts say that the higher property values are caused by an inability to meet the rise in demand for homes across the region. (inForney.com)
- Two decades of grief: Click over to read how the family of Dallas man killed in the World Trade Center attacks reflects on his life and love. (WFAA.com)
- Read how and why four Dallas officers received the Star of Texas Award Friday, designated for those who gave their lives or have been seriously injured in the performance of their duties as a first responder. (dpdbeat.com)
