🌱Grand Prairie Homeowner Kills Intruder + Winter Safety Tips

Good morning, neighbors! It's a special day for many in the area, so hopefully ya'll are relaxing with your favorite folks, taking some time to enjoy nature or have other pleasant things planned for the day. Here are the news and events I've gathered to help you get today started right!

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny and very warm. High: 81 Low: 62.

Here are the top five stories today in Irving:

  1. A homeowner shot and killed an intruder on Thursday, December 23, in Grand Prairie, according to CBS Dallas / Fort Worth. Police say Elon Thomas, 43, forced his way into a neighbor's home, where he was shot. Thomas later died at the hospital. The situation is under investigation, though no arrests have been made.
  2. Good news for an Irving-based company. Biote, a business specializing in hormone therapies, is going public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company called Haymaker Acquisition Corp. When the transaction is complete (estimated to be sometime in 2022), Biote will trade on the Nasdaq Stock Market as "BTMD." (Press Release Desk)
  3. Did you know that 25 percent of winter fires are caused by a Christmas tree being placed too close to a heat source? Another third of winter fires are caused by candles. Click the link to go to the City of Irving's page of tips and stats to help you and your loved ones stay safer this winter.
  4. Find your next furry friend on the Irving Patch's latest list of pets in the area that are ready for adoption.
  5. Lots of fretting about travel is in the news these days, including a slew of Christmas Eve flight cancellations at North Texas airports (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth). A passenger was removed from a flight at DFW due to being possibly positive for COVID-19 (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth). There was a surge in travelers at Love Field despite warnings about omicron (WFAA.com).

  • Irving's Marble Cow sculptures - The uniquely Texan landmark near the Ben Carpenter Statue offers a great photo opp for any visiting guests and a chance for children to get their wiggles out. (All day)
  • Movies + Beer - Alamo Drafthouse Cinema has showtimes all day! Click the link for tickets to the new Spider-Man, Sing 2 and more! (Varies)
  • Dallas Mavericks vs. Utah Jazz - American Airlines Center hosts. Tickets start at $10. (9:30 PM)
