Here are the top stories in Irving today:

  1. Head over to Public Radio for Northeast Texas to discover how a UT Southwestern lab is examining COVID-19 variants in the state. Highlights of the interview with Dr. James Cutrell, an associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, include insight into how the virus mutates, how it affects immunocompromised people and why the delta variant is so dominant right now. (88.9 KETR)
  2. The consequences of public camping got more serious earlier this month because of House Bill 1925. The bill bans camping in public areas unless authorized. Violators are subject to class-c misdemeanor charges along with a $500 fine. The Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance continues to team with local agencies to help the situation. Read more about their efforts at Star Local Media.
  3. Check out the City of Arlington's viral LEGO town video. The Dallas suburb got creative when it came time to explain civic budgeting. Attempts to recreate the innovative communication strategy may be halting, though, since the video utilized the already-built LEGO town that was constructed by the city's director of communications and legislative affairs. The set was built in his home over the past five years and includes around 350,000 pieces. (WFAA.com)
  4. A 29-year-old woman was killed in a crash near downtown Dallas, and the driver faces charges, officials say. (WFAA.com)
