Get caught up on the most important things happening today in the Irving area while you nibble your morning kolache.
Hey, neighbors! It's me again, Ash DeMello, your host of the Irving Metro Daily. So much is going on in the area these days— here are some of the highlights.
First, today's weather:
Mostly sunny. High: 76 Low: 59.
Here are the top stories today in Irving:
- "Screen time" has increased for many families these days, in part due to the lingering pandemic. To combat the negative impact of extended use of electronics for recreation, the Texas Medical Association (TMA) is launching a new initiative, Turn It Off Today. Click over to the article to review the possible side effects that too much time in front of a device can have on kids, check out the helpful links and maybe even take the pledge as a family to make a reduction! (Irving Weekly)
- Many community members in Arlington are sharing their dismay at a proposed expansion of a gas drilling site near a residential community. The owner of an adjacent daycare center is fighting it, saying the facility has already affected the health and safety of the children in her care. City staff appears opposed as well but say their hands are tied due to state regulations. Read more at WFAA.com.
- You might be in for a pay raise in the near future. Plamedie Ifasso reports that a variety of North Texas companies are raising their minimum pay to attract workers. Those considering the bump include Southwest Airlines, The Container Store and Frito Lay. Some organizations have increased hourly starting wages to $15 per hour, over twice Texas' current minimum wage. (WFAA.com)
- Find out more about the trial that's underway for an Arlington man accused of killing his wife days after she arrived in Texas. (Fort Worth Star-Telegram; subscription required)
- If you're in the mood for shepherd's pie, whisky and other Irish cuisine, head on over to Chet's Dallas, a new Irish restaurant in West End Dallas. Get the details at CultureMap Dallas.
