Here are the top three stories today in McKinney-Frisco:

  1. Six-year Frisco City Council member Shona Huffman announced her resignation on Thursday due to a recent cancer diagnosis. Huffman, who is also withdrawing from the race for re-election, initially announced her diagnosis via Facebook on Feb. 13. Huffman said that serving Frisco is "one of the greatest honors" of her life, and thanked city staff for their service. Once a form of resignation is received by the city's secretary's office, the City of Frisco says it will consider its options for filling the vacancy on the current Council and on the May 7 ballot. 2. The U.S. Women's National Team had a message to share when they played against Iceland the in SheBelieves Cup final at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday: "Protect Trans Kids." Several members of the soccer team had this phrase written on their wristbands throughout the game, reportedly to show solidarity with Texas transgender youth. Earlier this week, Governor Greg Abbott informed state health agencies that "medical treatments provided to transgender adolescents should be classified as child abuse," and that transgender children and their parents should be "reported to state authorities" by heath professionals. (Sporting News)
  3. After a COVID hiatus, the Krewe of Barkus dog parade and party will return in-person to downtown McKinney this Sunday, Feb. 27. This year's theme is "A Walk Down Memory Lane" in honor of the 20th year of the events. More than 300 dogs and their humans are currently registered to participate in the festivities, which include a costume contest and float entries in the parade. Krewe of Barkus begins at 12:30 p.m. at Mitchell Park and the parade starts at 2:00 p.m. (The Dallas Morning News)
