Here are the top stories today in McKinney-Frisco:
- New 2020 census data may inspire some changes in McKinney as its population booms. The city is cusp of breaking the 200,000-resident mark, which represents a nearly 50 percent increase in residents over the last decade. The population has also become more diverse, with a 356 percent increase in Asian residents and an 85 percent increase in Black residents since the last census was taken. As McKinney grows, city staff are planning for an increased demand for public services and will use this new data to help with its upcoming redistricting process. (Community Impact Newspaper)
- Raytheon Technologies, which just expanded its McKinney campus in September and employs more than 8,600 people in the Dallas-Forth Worth area, may lose thousands of workers over the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for federal employees and contractors. As an aerospace and defense contractor, the company will be faced with a choice when the Dec. 8 vaccination deadline comes, said CEO Greg Hayes, but Raytheon is prepared to enforce the mandate. According to Hayes, roughly 3 percent of the workforce does not intend to get vaccinated and 3 percent plan to seek religious or medical exemptions. (The Dallas Morning News)
- A 29-year-old Frisco man has been sentenced to 65 years in prison after violently attacking his ex-girlfriend. Derick Tobar-Gonzalez pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. (Star Local Media)
- Hank's Texas Grill, located at 1310 N. Central Expressway in McKinney, is slated to reopen on Nov. 3 after closing during the pandemic and undergoing a series of recent renovations. (Community Impact Newspaper)
