The Department of English and the Cultural Enrichment Center in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences is hosting a poetry performance with Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton 2:30 – 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Mouton is internationally known writer, librettist, educator, activist, performer and Houston’s first African-American Poet Laureate. Formerly ranked the #2 Best Female Performance Poet in the world, her poetry collection ā€œNewsworthyā€ (Bloomsday Literary) garnered a Pushcart nomination, named a finalist for the 2019 Writer’s League of Texas Book Award and honorable mention for the Summerlee Book Prize. This summer, a German translation was released under the title ā€œBerichtenswertā€ (Elif Verlag).

Currently, Mouton is the 2021-2022 artist-in-residence at Rice University’s Center for Engaged Research & Collaborative Learning and resident artist for American Lyric Theater. Owner of Deep Ink LLC, her anticipated works include a community writing workshop centered on personal mythology (modelled after her forthcoming book Black Chameleon), an art-based project that interprets local mythologies into visual art, and a community exhibit highlighting community and professional artists. Named to Houston Business Journal’s ā€œ2021 40 Under 40 Class.ā€

A former Houston Poet Laureate, she has been a leading light in her adopted city for bringing poetry to its people. ā€œ

This free event will be presented in-person (Welcome Center Milam/Travis Rooms) and via Livestream. Refreshments will be served.
