Grand Jury Indicts Mont Belvieu Man For Killing Ex-Wife

Steven McDowell is accused of murdering 37-year old Crystal McDowell in August.

BAYTOWN, TX — A Chambers County grand jury has indicted a Mont Belvieu man for the murder of his ex-wife.

Steven McDowell, 44, as indicted Nov. 16 for the murder of 37-year old Crystal McDowell on Aug. 25.

Steven McDowell allegedly confessed to police after a two week investigation, and led police to her decomposing body in a Baytown field.

Crystal McDowell was last seen the evening of Aug. 25, when she left her home and told her boyfriend she was going to pick up her children from her ex-husband.

Hours after leaving her home, Hurricane Harvey made landfall on the Texas coast.

Crystal McDowell’s family filed a missing person’s report the next day with the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, but the search for the missing woman was hampered by severe flooding.

A week after she vanished, McDowell’s black Mercedes Benz was found in a flooded motel parking lot along Interstate 10.

Several days after her car was found, Steven McDowell met with investigators and allegedly confessed to strangling his ex-wife.

He was charged with her murder and has been in the Chambers County Jail with his bond set at $500,000 since Sept 10.
